Mintlaw Academy Young Engineers are set for Seattle for a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete in the International Final of the ROV Mate competition.

The Regional competition run by ROV Mate and sponsored by RGU and BP is open to all schools in Scotland and gives secondary school pupils the opportunity to design, build and fly model ROV’s. Rovs are an underwater robot which can carry out a series of tasks on the sea bed. The team of five from Mintlaw have spent 5 months, working every lunchtime and after school to prepare their vehicle for the tasks, building their model from scratch they have engineered different parts, dealt with electronic challenges but more importantly have developed a large amount of transferable skills that has prepared them for future challenges.

The International  final will be held in the Weyerhaeuser King Aquatic Centre Seattle Washington, USA from 20th – 22nd June, teams from several states in the USA, Hongkong, Tokyo and Egypt will compete to become the best ROV group in the world.

This is is a great achievement for the 5 boys as this was the first year the school have entered the competition. Pictured are the team, Douglas Leel, Liam Forbes, Kieran Yule, Gareth Swinney and David Finnie. Raising Attainment

Raising Attainment – Target Setting

Mintlaw Academy is committed to raising the standard of attainment for its pupils.. A new initiative has been introduced to support pupils achieve their best potential.

In all subjects from S4-S6 all pupils will be issued with a target from their teachers which will be closely monitored throughout the session.

Pupils who are not working at their expected level will be offered additional support and strategies to get them “back on track” early and before the exams.

The role of parents is vital in this and it would be helpful if these targets and current level of performance is discussed at home.

Congratulations to all who took part in the competition, special thank goes to D Jennings from Central Buchan Rotary Club and  Prof. Pete Stollery from Aberdeen University the Adjudicator.
