Mintlaw Academy Young Engineers are set for Seattle for a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete in the International Final of the ROV Mate competition.

The Regional competition run by ROV Mate and sponsored by RGU and BP is open to all schools in Scotland and gives secondary school pupils the opportunity to design, build and fly model ROV’s. Rovs are an underwater robot which can carry out a series of tasks on the sea bed. The team of five from Mintlaw have spent 5 months, working every lunchtime and after school to prepare their vehicle for the tasks, building their model from scratch they have engineered different parts, dealt with electronic challenges but more importantly have developed a large amount of transferable skills that has prepared them for future challenges.

The International  final will be held in the Weyerhaeuser King Aquatic Centre Seattle Washington, USA from 20th – 22nd June, teams from several states in the USA, Hongkong, Tokyo and Egypt will compete to become the best ROV group in the world.

This is is a great achievement for the 5 boys as this was the first year the school have entered the competition. Pictured are the team, Douglas Leel, Liam Forbes, Kieran Yule, Gareth Swinney and David Finnie. The boys would like to thank their sponsors, Bill Mackie Engineering, Plumb Centre, Duthie Motors Longside and their mentor, Neil Stagg from BP.
